lesson 18 Perfectionism

wps-clip-image-15821Perfectionism is a personality inside of a person that can be characterized by an individual striving for flawlessness and setting excessively high performance standards for themselves. Perfectionists are far more critical of themselves than they are of others. In severe cases, the personality of a perfectionist drives them to attempt to achieve unobtainable goals in life. And because they don’t achieve these goals for themselves, they often live with unceasing guilt.

· You find yourself correcting bad English and never abbreviating in emails that you write, or text messages that you send.

Philippians 2:5-8 …Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross!

1 John 3:1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should called children of God! And that is what we are!

Romans 1:7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

· wps-clip-image-16815Jesus can demand from us what he also supplies for us by his grace and he does. His holiness, which he gives to us through faith in him, is the blessed joy that we Christians get to live with each day in this life. Jesus shed his blood for us on a cross and has taken away all of our sins and has set us apart from the world as his family members. Christians, therefore, strive to imitate the life of Jesus, but not as perfectionists, but rather as children who simply want to please their Father in heaven who has already made them perfect through the merits of Christ.

· Consider the following passages and determine how these words of Scripture will help us in understanding our walk of faith in this life…

wps-clip-image-20875Galatians 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

· Our conscience can become so sensitive that we start to see sin in areas of life that God has not declared something to be sinful…then we are being burdened by the law and not living through the freedom of the gospel.

Luke 7:31-34 ”To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other: “‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’ 33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and ”sinners.“’

· If we are governed only by the law of God and not the gospel, we will find ourselves always falling short of God’s desire for us as his children. But is that what God really wants of us as his children, to never know where we stand before him? Absolutely not! He wants our hearts to be set free by the gospel and serve him out of love and joy that the Holy Spirit imparts to us by faith. Read the following…

Romans 5:1,2 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

  1. Describe the comfort that Paul desires for the Christian in these words, ”In which we now stand.“

wps-clip-image-137991 Corinthians 10:23-33 ”Everything is permissible“—but not everything is beneficial. ”Everything is permissible“—but not everything is constructive.24 Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others. 25 Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience, 26 for, ”The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.“ 27 If some unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of

conscience. 28 But if anyone says to you, ”This has been offered in sacrifice,“ then do not eat it, both for the sake of the man who told you and for conscience’ sake— 29 the other man’s conscience, I mean, not yours. For why should my freedom be judged by another’s conscience? 30 If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for? 31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— 33 even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.

· Paul wants Christians to be governed by common sense that looks out for their fellow brother or sister. Notice he doesn’t want our conscience to be so sensitive that we wonder at every instance as to whether or not what we are doing is correct and acceptable before God.

Martin Luther once said,

”A Christian man is the freest lord of all, and subject to no one; a Christian man is the most dutiful servant of all, and subject to everyone.“

  1. Explain what is meant by that statement.

The Apostle Paul said,

1 Corinthians 9:19-23 Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one wps-clip-image-12486under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some.23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

· Striving to be a perfect servant like Jesus is not the same thing as striving to be a perfectionist in all that we do or say. Striving to be a perfectionist is done out of guilt that comes from the law and will always leave us feeling empty in the end. On the other hand, when we strive to be perfect servants like our Savior, for the sake of the gospel, we are doing so out of love for our fellow man because we want them to enjoy the forgiveness and salvation that is ours through Jesus.

Matthew 6:25-34 ”Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
