Part One – Things To Do Before I Teach

A. Setting curriculum (choosing the subjects)The first thing is to decide what subjects are the most important for you to teach. To do that you must first know who your students are, what their needs are, and then you can choose, or help them choose, the most important subjects for study.

  1. Who will be your students?

    a) Long time Christians, new Christians, or non-Christians?

    b) Children, young adults, adults?

    c) Men or women or both?

    d) Educated or uneducated, readers or non-readers?

  2. What are their needs?

    a) Basic Christian teaching or more advanced teaching (1 Cor. 3:2, Heb. 5:12)

    b) Overview of Bible doctrine or meeting particular problems

    c) Knowledge, encouragement, or admonition

    d) Personal growth or to fulfill a requirement

  3. Choosing the subjects

    a) Involve the students in helping to choose (when it is appropriate)

    b) Bible history, Bible books or chapters, specific doctrines, or specific problems

    c) Get ideas from materials/courses written by others

    d) Fit the subjects into a bigger plan (for the month, year, course, etc.)

    e) Make sure your big plan fits with the rest of the congregation’s plans5

Exercise 1: You are an evangelist reaching out to Muslim people (or choose a different group) in your neighborhood. You have succeeded in witnessing to several families, they seem interested, but they still are not ready to come to church or Bible class. You decide to have a series of eight Bible classes in their homes to help them come to faith or grow in faith and prepare to come to church. Make a curriculum outline of eight Bible studies, selecting the main subjects for each study. Explain also your reason for the order that you put them in.6

B. Studying (getting to know the subjects) As a teacher, you must have a deep knowledge of what you are teaching. This requires study and preparation. You will dig into your Bible to learn about the subject and read other books written by dependable Christian leaders. You will also ask for help from other more knowledgeable Christians and check your information with them.

  1. Direct Bible study

    a) Study the context of the story or verses that you will be teaching

    b) Study all the passages dealing with a subject

    c) Study how a word is used in various parts of the Bible

    d) Compare several translations of the same verse or passage

  2. Indirect Bible study

    a) Read about a verse or passage in The People’s Bible Commentary

    b) Read about a doctrine in a Bible information course or other good doctrinal books (The People’s Bible Teachings series)

    c) Read what Luther or some other dependable Christian leader has written about your subject

  3. Seeking help from other Christians

    a) Seek advice or help from your pastor (who has more complete training)

    b) Seek advice or help from other qualified people (teachers, elders, etc.)

Exercise 2: You are teaching your first lesson to your Muslim home Bible study class (or whatever other group you chose in Exercise 1)。 The subject is “The Bible is the inspired Word of God.” Explain how you might go about studying and preparing to teach that class.7

C. Deciding on a theme and objectives (deciding on the main points) Once you know what your subject is and have studied the subject, you are ready for the next step – setting objectives. In this step you will pick out a theme for the lesson, select the most important points you want to teach your students about the theme, and write these points down in a clear and precise way. If the points are well written, they will tell you and your students what the students are to learn.

  1. Make your subject into a theme for the lesson

    a) A statement of fact that arouses interest (The man who was buried by God)

    b) A question which does not have an obvious answer (Are there dogs in heaven?)

    c) A problem that needs to be solved (How can a Christian can be a slave and a free man at the same time?)

  2. Select the most important points

    a) Good teachers select just a few important points to teach in each lesson

    b) Select the points that are most important for the students to know and which will explain the theme or solve its problem

    c) Put them in the order in which they can best be taught

Exercise 3: You are teaching an adult Bible class about King Solomon. Listed below are some of the many things you could teach about. Select the four points you think are most important to teach, and then arrange them in the order in which you might teach them. Explain your reasons.

—— Solomon is known as the wisest man

—— Solomon built the temple on Mt. Moriah in Jerusalem

—— The temple took seven years to build

—— The temple cost millions of dollars

—— Under Solomon, Israel became a powerful nation

—— The temple was 30 feet wide, 90 feet deep and 45 feet high

—— God allowed Solomon to build the temple

—— Solomon’s many wives led him away from faithfulness to God

—— Solomon wrote several books of the Bible

—— Solomon’s wives brought heathen worship to Jerusalem

—— Solomon spent 13 years building his palace

  3. Write down your objectives

    a) Use short, clear sentences

    b) Each point should complete this sentence:

“At the end of this lesson each student should be able to …”

    c) Use action verbs: write, tell, explain, list, define, apply, give examples, etc.

    d) Use numbers and other ways of being precise

Note: Your objectives should be more similar to questions than answers. They should help the student know what he will be learning (“write the names of the three sons of Adam”) but not give away the information (“the three sons of Adam were Cain, Abel and Seth”)。

Example: An adult Bible class is studying how after Solomon the Jews were divided into two kingdoms. The following could be your objectives:

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

    1) Tell the main reason why Israel became divided.

    2) Give the names of the two kingdoms and the capital city of each.

    3) Describe how the religions of the two kingdoms differed.

Exercise 4: Continue planning your lesson on King Solomon. Take the points you selected in Exercise 3 and use them to write objectives for your lesson similar to the example given above.

  4. Do your objectives tell your students what they are to learn? Well-written objectives help the teacher focus on the most important points in the lesson. They will also make it clear to the students what they are to learn. By telling the students the objectives at the beginning of the class, the students can focus on the answers you feel are most important to learn. This will allow them to be watching for those answers. And when you ask about them later, they will not be surprised that you wanted them to learn those particular things. Look again at the example above about the divided kingdom. The students will know they are to look for the cause of the breakup, the names of the kingdoms and their capitals, and a comparison of their religions. Throughout the class they can be watching for just these important points.
