Reading 6 -The Three Facets of the Learning Process

In the process of learning, the human body and soul interact in three separate yet interdependent activities: knowing (cognitive), feeling (affective), and willing (volitive)。

Cognitive –- Record (sensations), recall (conceptions), imagine, think (compare, analyze, synthesize, evaluate), adjust

Affective –- Sensations are recorded with positive or negative feelings (emotions)

Volitive -– Imitate, desire or detest (attitude), do or not do (action), form habits and character, put off “Old Adam” and put on “New Man”

  1. When we teach a story, we want our students to learn more than facts. We want them to be able to apply what they learn to their lives. When a story shows man’s sin, we want our students to be sorry for their own sin and be led to repentance. When a story shows God’s grace, we want our students to understand that God gives his grace to them as well, and to rejoice in that fact. When a student takes to heart God’s law and gospel in this way we call it appropriation.

  2. Other Bible stories teach us how we should live. These stories tell us what we should do or should not do. Often they teach us general principles (do not steal) which Christians will apply to their own lives (don’t shoplift, don’t cheat on taxes, etc.)。 This kind of teaching to the heart we call application.

  3. A good teacher will always encourage his students to take God’s law and gospel to heart (appropriation) and help them learn how to apply the Bible’s general principals to their lives (application)。 If you look again at the basic lesson plan outline on page 12, you will see that application is the final part of developing each main point. Depending on the truth being taught, each main point should include appropriation and/or application.

Exercise 9: Read the story of Jesus’ transfiguration in Matthew 17:1-9. List all the aspects of Peter’s knowing, feeling and willing (i.e., sensations, emotions, actions)。 Write one question that will help students with the appropriation of truth from this story and a second question that will help them learn an application for their lives.
