Overcoming personal barriers to witnessing
|Complete this sentence: I hestitate to share my faith with others because _______
Below are a number of reasons Christians use to excuse themselves from sharing the gospel with others.
[ The basis for these items are suggested by Thom S. Rainer, CEO of LifeWay Christian Resources.
On a scale of 1 (not at all) to 5 (very much), how much does each statement apply to you?
_____ Christians have no sense of urgency to reach lost people.
It’s clear that without a faith relationship with Jesus, no one can be saved. Acts 4:12 insists, “Salvation is found in no one else [except Jesus], for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Why would Christians fail to have a sense of urgency to help others escape hell?
_____ Many Christians and church members do not befriend and spend time with lost persons. What factors prohibit Christians from befriending people who are not Christians?
_____ We are more known for what we are against than what we are for.
Bible-believing Christians view homosexuality, abortion, divorce, sex outside of marriage, and many other activities our culture considers proper to be sinful because God’s Word says they are sins. How do these counter-cultural values set up barriers to our witnessing? What can we do to minimize those barriers?
_____ Many church members think that evangelism is the role of the pastor and paid staff.
Because Jesus commands all of his disciples to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19,20), the Savior made it clear that personal evangelism is every believer’s responsibility and privilege. How do we overcome this barrier? Is there another, more compelling reason that Christians would want to pass off their witnessing to their pastor and other church leaders?
_____ Political correctness is too commonplace even among Christians. We are frightened to share our faith because we might be persecuted or simply lose friends.
Jesus warns, “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 10:37-39). Nonetheless, we Christians may hide from opportunities to share Jesus with others out of fear of personal consequences. Give some examples.
_____ Our churches have too many activities; Christians are too busy to do the things that really matter. In addition, Christians in our culture are too busy; their priorities don’t leave room for caring enough about others to witness to them.
How do Jesus words in Matthew 6:33, help us address our faulty priorities? “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” What do you need to do in order to live out priorities that honor God better?
Did you notice that these personal barriers to sharing our faith with others are all ways we stand outside of what the Spirit calls and equips us to do? Consequently, overcoming these barriers begins with recognizing that they are not God pleasing excuses for telling others about Jesus. That will lead us to admit the sin involved in hiding behind these barriers, to claiming our Jesus-won forgiveness, and to joyfully recommit to share the gospel out of gratitude for God’s grace. Let’s take time now to confess those sins and then to claim God’s assurance of forgiveness for those sins.
Although we have identified some barriers to personally sharing Jesus with others, admitted the sin, and received forgiveness, there is another important step to take. That step is to identify where to find motivation powerful enough to overcome those barriers in the future. 2 Corinthians 5:14-21 connects us to that motivation. What is it? Take a moment as a class to rejoice in that motivation.
For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
