第八课(Lesson Eight)

GOD USES BAPTISM TO GET TO US 神通过洗礼接近我们 So far, we have learned that we can not believe on our own. Only God can bring us into His family of believers. We learned that this is one of the Holy Spirit’s specialties. God wants to get to us with His grace. Grace is God’s love that gives us the opposite of what we deserve. Jesus came and told the world about God’s grace. God also serves us in two special ways that communicate that God really has legitimately dissociated us from our sins. They are Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. We call them Sacraments. A SACRAMENT is . . .

  1. a special service that —————- set up.
  3. It must involve a ———- ———– and use special ———————————————— .
  5. It must communicate to us the news about the ——————— Jesus earned us.
clip-image002 God uses two pipelines to get to us with the life-saving message about Jesus. The Gospel sinks in because of our connection to the Bible’s Law / Gospel approach. The Holy Spirit also uses two sacraments to connect with us. This two-pronged pipeline approach we call the “Means of Grace.” Note: Baptism is one way God conveys beautiful, liberating news. Too often people distort baptism to make it all about me. They make it about a message I’m sending God. They make baptism about what I’ve done for Him. This sucks the life out of this normally powerful tool.

Where in the Bible does Jesus give us directions about Baptism? Matthew 28:18-20 Jesus says that our mission is to be His partner in reaching people everywhere. He says baptizing and teaching are the ways we get His work done. Once again, Jesus mentions these two indispensible tools – the Bible and Baptism. The Holy Spirit uses them to bring people into God’s rescued family.

Where does the Bible say Baptism really does make people believers?

1 Peter 3:20-21 The Holy Spirit had Peter write about the way the global flood waters ironically rescued the people in the ark. Then Peter mentions that the water we use in baptism also saves people too. It leads them to believe that what Jesus did 2000 years ago applies to me personally today. Acts 2:38-39 Peter promises that God uses baptism to hand out a pardon to people individually, as well as the gift of the Holy Spirit to believe this news. What does my Baptism mean for me? Baptism is all gospel and no law. Your baptism comes with a lot of plus sides. A. Acts 2:38 God dealt with all your personal sins already on Jesus. That exempts you from punishment now and forever. B. Acts 2:38 The Holy Spirit now lives inside of you. C. Romans 6:1-4 The Holy Spirit helps you say no to sin. D. Galatians 3:27 You’re part of Jesus’ family with all the rights of a saint. Is everyone who gets baptized automatically saved? Mark 16:16 People who reject what baptism offers lose the safety net of God’s pardon.

Isn’t baptism PG-13? Why do Lutherans baptize babies? Acts 2:38-39 We do it for the same reason that believers right after Jesus did. They knew baptism works. God uses it to reach even babies with the news about Jesus. Also look up Acts 16:33. The burden of proof is on people who refuse babies and children baptism. A. Psalm 51:5; Romans 6:23 Unborn babies share our sin predicament. B. Ezekiel 18:20 God holds even infants accountable for their sinfulness. C. Galatians 3:26-27 God promises baptism gives anyone a new identity. D. Matthew 28:19 God does not limit Baptism to any age group. E. Ephesians 2:1-10 Baptism is gospel. The gospel works at producing believers. Baptism works – at making believers out of babies. Baptism’s miracle in children is no more incredible than faith’s miracle in adults. F. Luke 18:15-17 The Greek word here for “babies” only refers to unborn children and infants. Jesus says God can work in babies. See Mark 10:13-16. 10:13—16. Why do some church people refuse babies baptism? They believe Baptism is something we do for God. They say getting baptized is a way we show we’re believers. They don’t believe baptism works on babies, because we can’t prove it. The Bible never teaches these things. The Anabaptists first started refusing babies baptism during the 1600’s. Did the Christians after Jesus baptize babies? Absolutely. The Christians closest to Jesus’ time considered baptism a way God reaches out to bring a person into His family of believers. Think about this: 当然。 One of the leaders of Christians closest to Jesus’ time, Origen, born in 185 A.D., tells us infant baptism was one of the things the apostles taught people to do. Irenaeus (202 A.D.), whose mentor was Polycarp, whose mentor was the apostle John, wrote: “Jesus came to save all people by Himself; all, I say, who through Him are reborn into God; infants, little children, boys, young men and old men.” Augustine, born 353 A.D., is one of the most famous leaders of Christians closest to Jesus’ time. He said he never heard of anyone who accepted the Bible as God’s Word who also refused infant baptism. Numerous inscriptions on the graves in the catacombs, dating back to the very first centuries after Jesus’ time, tell about those Christians baptizing their children. Here is one: “Aristus lived eight months. He was recently baptized.” Does it matter how much water we use when we baptize? No! Nowhere does the Bible give us a specific amount of water to use when baptizing. As far back as 165 A.D., on some of those burial chambers under Rome’s streets, we see pictures of baptisms by pouring water over the head. Anyway, it’s not the water that has the power. It’s the words Jesus tells us to use with the water. People argue about all kinds of things when it comes to baptism – what kind of water to use, how much water to use, whether baptism is PG-13, who may do baptisms. When the Bible doesn’t make rules about something, we aren’t going out of our way to make up new ones. Baptism is a wonderful gift from God. It’s a miracle that God can make anyone a believer. Using baptism to bring babies into His family of believers is just as amazing. God doesn’t ask us to understand it, just to use it and enjoy this miracle.
