第十课(Lesson Ten)

What does the Bible say about Christian prayer? Psalm 19:14 Christian prayer is a heart to heart talk with the only real God – the Triune God. Isaiah 59:1-2 Christian prayer is not a right. It’s a privilege Jesus earned for us. 9:10-12 Jesus helped Paul understand. Paul’s fate didn’t depend on the quality of his prayer life. On his own Paul had tried solving his own problems rather than consulting God. He had been preoccupied with his own needs, rather than other peoples’ needs. Jesus freed him from that negative living. CHRISTIAN PRAYER IS SOMETHING WE WANT TO DO ONCE WE FIND OUT WE DON’T HAVE TO DO IT. How should we pray? John 15:16 “In Jesus’ name” – This means asking God not to pay attention to us because of what we’ve done, but because of what Jesus did in our place. 1 John 5:14 “Do what You want, not what I want.” God is smarter than we are. He knows what’s best for us. So we give Him “veto rights” over our requests. Matthew 7:7-11 Trust that God will answer us in His own time and way. Four possible answers:

  1. Yes – Exodus 32:7-14
  2. No – 2 Corinthians 12:7-10
  3. Wait – Malachi 4:1-6
  4. Here is something better – Job 42:10-13
  9. What do we need to have good, balanced prayers? F—————– (Think of something you’ve done wrong today.) F———————-(想想你今天做的错事) T——————- (Think of a blessing from God today.) T————————-(想想今天神对你的祝福) O——————- (Think of some other specific person to pray for.) O————- (想想看有没有其他人需要你为他祷告) M——————- (Think of personal things you want to talk to God about.) M————(想想你想和神谈的一些个人的事情) Petitions:————————————————————- 请求———————————————— Intercessions:———————————————————- (We pray for all people, great and small, friend and foe. 5:43-45) What if I don’t know what to pray for? Romans 8:26-27 We can pray from our heart and trust that the Holy Spirit will make the right requests to the Father in our place. What if I feel too guilty to pray? Romans 8:34 We can pray confident that Jesus has covered all our crimes in God’s record book. How often should I pray? 1 Thessalonians 5:17 We should keep the communication channel to God open all day. As we go about our business, we can let God in on our thought-lives. We still should set aside time to speak to God the way we set aside time to be with people we’re close to. (Jesus often spent all night by Himself praying to His Father in heaven.) Great prayers in the Bible John 17 Jesus Prays for Himself and His People 1 Kings 8:22-53 Solomon’s Prayer to dedicate the first permanent Jewish Temple Daniel 9:1-17 Daniel’s prayer admits the faults of God’s people. Habakkuk The entire book is a prayer with God’s response. People who prayed great prayers
  10. Posture: Kneeling, folded hands, and bowed head can be helpful, if they help us concentrate.
  11. Place: Find a quiet place by yourself, as Jesus often did. Setting aside a definite time each day to pray there is of tremendous value in your personal devotional life.
  13. Wording: Speak honestly and directly from your heart with your own words, not with technical Bible words you don’t understand. Try to keep it brief, but not hurried. Written prayer books can be helpful if they remind us of the four elements of good, balanced prayers. They don’t need to take the place of prayers in our own words. Praying out loud, even when alone, may help you concentrate.
  15. Reminder: Prayer and Bible study go together! “Pray through” parts of the Bible, verse-by-verse, paragraph-by-paragraph.
Your title here…The Lord’s Prayer 主祷文 Jesus wants to help us understand some of the basic concepts and priorities of Christian prayer. We call the prayer He gave the Lord’s Prayer. It’s in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:1-4. The Lord’s Prayer Explained 对主祷文的解释 Our Father in heaven, 我们在天上的父, We’re praying in Jesus’ Name. Don’t give us what we deserve. Give us what Jesus earned us – the opposite of what we deserve. Don’t hear us because we do religious things, like pray, like praying the Lord’s Prayer. Don’t hear us because of what we’ve done. Hear us because of what Jesus did in our place. Hallowed be your name. Your Name is Your reputation – what we know about You from the Bible. You want to be famous for what Jesus did for sinners. Help our 1 priority be daily Bible use as we grow as Your people. Help us remember we may be the only Bible some people ever read. Help us remember people learn from what our lives and expressions preach. Help us show that what Jesus did for us means a lot. Your kingdom come. Your kingdom is Your family of believers. Keep me part of that select group. Bring as many other people into it as possible before it’s too late. You are passionate about rescuing people for heaven. Your kingdom comes when Your people go to the world with Your word. Give us the words to say and the courage to say them. Help me never forget the Holy Spirit’s supernatural power even when dealing with “hopeless” cases. Make us and all Your people willing to pray, work, and give to bring Jesus to others. Help us care about people who are weak believers or who don’t know Jesus’ news at all. Your will be done on earth as in heaven. You “want” all people to be saved and come to know the truth. You “want” everyone who depends on Jesus to have never-ending life. That’s what You want most of all. Help us remember You base all Your decisions for our lives on those important facts. Help us remember to give You “veto-rights” over whatever we ask. You are smarter that we are. You know best. Help me remember that when You say “no.” Give us today our daily bread. You give life’s necessities even if we don’t ask. We take You for granted. We always have our hands out. You’re no genie in a bottle, serving our every whim. You promise what we need, not everything we want. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Thanks for not being a selective forgiver. Thanks for not waiting until we’re really “sorry.” Thanks for not waiting until we promise we won’t do wrong again. Thanks for not putting conditions on Your forgiveness. Help us do better at forgiving the way You do. People closest to us and people we don’t know need it. Help us forgive in honor of Jesus, not because of what we’ll get out of it. Lead us not into temptation. You led Jesus into temptation in the wilderness. His whole life was an unbroken record of successes in the face of temptations. Give us Bible reinforcement and unselfish motives to make right decisions about how we’re going to behave. But deliver us from evil. Our definition of “evil” and Your definition are not the same. We think anything unexpected, anything that hurts, anything that causes us problems is evil. You let these things happen for our eternal welfare. You turn evil into good. Keep us from whining. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are Yours now and forever. Amen. You’re the one in control of everything that happens everywhere. You’re in charge of all the twists and turns of our individual lives. When all is said and done, when we look back at our lives and our world when we’re in heaven one day, we’ll be able to say, “I wouldn’t change a thing.” You deserve the credit for that. You mastermind things with more wisdom, insight and knowledge than we could ever have. Help us mean what we pray in the Lord’s Prayer. Multiple Choice.
