lesson 11 - New Age Movement

Introduction

介绍

Our objective in this study is to understand the people of our own culture, including many who call themselves Christian. For the world has always influenced Christianity in a profoundly negative way. The New Age Movement, which is embraced by much of our world, certainly has impacted the visible church of today. This study is meant to teach us not only about the movement, but also its devastating impact on the church.

History of the New Age Movement

• It’s a philosophy of beliefs that combines Eastern cults and religious beliefs

• Some trace the “New Age Movement” back to Helena Blavatsky, (from Ukraine) who founded a theosophical Society in 1875. She claimed to receive telepathic instruction from “Masters,” who had died and evolved into a “higher plane,” such as Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, and Confucius. Along with teaching evolution, she taught that all religions have common truths, especially the eastern Indian religion. Her basic “New Age Philosophy,” which really wasn’t anything new, was that man can save himself because man is ultimately god. Communism, Nazism, secular humanism and many other movements all have common ground with Blavatsky. Her most famous follower from Russia was the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. And her most loyal follower in America today is actress, Shirley Maclaine, who travels all across America to consult the dead on behalf of the living.

• There is a perverse curiosity in human nature to know the secret “mysteries” of Satan. But the Bible reminds us over and over again to stand clear of his crafty arts, lest they overtake us. Read the following…

Revelation 2:24 Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets…

Acts 19:13-16 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.”14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” 16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.

What is the New Age Movement?

a. The New Age movement has many sub-divisions, but it is generally a collection of Eastern-influenced philosophies with a conglomeration of theologies and doctrines that center in “feel-goodism,” “universal tolerance,” and “moral relativism” (What’s true for me might not be true for you and vice versa).

b. In the New Age Movement,** Man is central**. He is viewed as divine, as co-creator, as the hope for future peace and harmony.

c. The Great Paradox of the New Age Movement. They are tolerant of everyone and everything in life with the exception of those who claim there’s only one way.

• Since New Agers believe themselves to be somewhat divine, it is only natural then that they get to create their own reality. If someone doesn’t believe in their reality, that’s alright too, because that is someone else’s reality. However, if you get caught in the crux of narrow-mindedness like radical Islam or conservative Christianity, then you have completely missed the boat of why those founders (Muhammad & Jesus) came to this earth in the first place (According to New Agers).

Consider the effect that the New Age Movement has had upon a famous American actor, who professes to be Christian – Dennis Quaid. Here’s an interview of the actor who professes to be Christian…

What qualities do families need to stay together?

Love. Families need a spiritual bond with one another and with God. God is the only way you’re going to make it in life, the glue that holds everything together.

What’s your own religious background, and where are you with it now?

I grew up Baptist and still go to church. I myself have explored other religions, because I want to know what it is that makes other people tick. I find we’re all talking about the same thing; really-it’s all God.

What things have you explored? Have you traveled places or met certain people that had an impact on you?

I went around the world three times and made it a point to ask people what it is that they believe and why.

What’s the most interesting thing you heard?

What I find is that we’re all human beings and that it’s all very similar, what we believe. At the bottom, there’s really not that much difference between Christians and Muslims and Hindus and Buddhists. We all worship God.

You went to India with a Baptist minister, right?

Yes, I’ve been to India several times. I went with a friend of mine, John Meyrick, who’s a Baptist minister. I got baptized when I was nine years old, but he re-baptized me in the Ganges River.

The holy river of India?

Yeah.

是的。

What was it like being in such a Hindu environment with a Baptist minister?

It was very interesting. The great thing about Hindu culture is that they’re very inclusive. They really are just as interested in Christianity as we were in finding out about Hinduism, so it was a great exchange of ideas.

Certainly I’m a Christian first and foremost. But I do believe in religious tolerance and finding the commonality between all of us. I think that’s how we’re all going to come together.

Are there certain Bible passages that mean a lot to you?

I particularly like the red words, what Jesus said. Certainly the story of the prodigal son, and Jesus’ parables, which no matter how many times you read them you can interpret them into your own life in different ways as you grow in life. According to one’s level, you can read them simply or interpret them in a very complex way, but they still remain a mystery.

You’ve had struggles with drugs as well as family struggles. Is there something in the story of the prodigal son that especially resonates with you?

Yes, and that is that no matter what, the door is always open to the Lord. All one has to do is open one’s heart and ask, and he’ll be there. It’s certainly been a comfort in my life.

What do you want your son to know about Christianity?

I want him to know about Jesus and Jesus’ life, why Jesus came here, why he was on earth. He came here and died for our sins. He came here to teach us how to live. He’s an example to all of us-it seems like no matter how hard we try, even the best of us Christians, we can’t come close, we fall short of living our life in that perfect way that he did. But it’s all about keeping your eye on that.

Some Christians worry about incorporating Eastern practices-like yoga-into their lives. Are there spiritual practices you have that you think dovetail with your Christianity?

Well, meditation, for one. I believe it’s not really just a Hindu idea. Jesus himself talked about prayer and meditation. Anything that brings you closer to the Lord, what’s wrong with that?

New Agers seek Global Unity

Three major divisions:

1) Man with Man

2) Man with Nature

3) Man with God.

• Within this hoped harmony between man, nature, and God is economic unity or equality. The average New Ager is looking for a single world leader who, with New Age principles, will guide the world into a single harmonious economic whole.

• It is also hoped that this leader will unite the world into a spiritual unity; that is, a one world religion.

Read the following passages of Scripture to determine is such unity is possible with man, the world, and with God while living here on earth…

Ephesians 2:14-18 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

  1. Based on Paul’s words to the Christians at Ephesus, how can global peace be accomplished? And, the second question is this: why won’t global peace between man and man ever be accomplished in this earthly life?

2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.

Romans 8:20-22 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.

  2. There’s an awful lot of talk in the world, even in American politics, to bring earth and our environment back into harmony with ourselves. In America they used to label it as Global warming, but now that the research has been debunked they call it Climate change. Many world religions embrace the idea of man getting into harmony with nature. But what does Paul say about this effort in his letter to the Romans?

John 1:4,5 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

  3. The bible makes it very clear to us that God desires the salvation of all and that Jesus Christ died for the sins of the “whole world” (John 3:16). However, what is consequence of man’s unbelief? Will there be harmony on this earth between man (the whole population on earth) and God?

    • The New Agers have a name for the earth. It is Gaia. Gaia is to be revered and respected. Some New Agers even worship the earth and nature.

    Additional beliefs regarding New Agers

    • god (he/she/it) is impersonal, omnipresent, and benevolent – therefore (it) won’t condemn anyone.

Read what Satan asked Eve in the Garden…

Genesis 3:1-4 He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ” 4 “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman.

    • Most New Agers believe in a form of reincarnation. And what makes reincarnation so appealing to the New Ager is that instead of condemnation (which they’ve already silenced their conscience in this regards) they get second and third chances in another life.

  4. How is it a contradiction to say that there are “No” absolutes (What might be right for you might not be right for me)?

  5. Would living in a world of moral relativism (what is true for you may not be true for me) bring man into harmony with man or man into harmony with nature? Why or why not?

New Agers View of Christ

b. Interview with Goldie Hawn (Jewish mom and Presbyterian dad) Goldie Hawn is a very famous American Actress who has a long time “partner” (not husband) by the name of Kurt Russell, who is also a very famous American actor.

I was struck by the fact that, even back then, you celebrated Christmas and you had a friend who helped you say the rosary-yet you identified as Jewish.

I know! My best friend was Catholic and that also is a very strong pull. And because she was my best friend, I used to go to church with her all the time.

So you had a multifaith childhood.

Definitely. I also went to the Presbyterian church. And it was so great not to be stopped, you see. A parent can say, “You’re Jewish, you don’t get to do that. This is our faith, you don’t get to learn about it.” But my mother loved Jesus-she was just a complete Jesus freak.

She was?

Oh, and I am too-that’s another interesting thing.

Why?

He went to the desert; he sat quietly. He sat so quietly that he heard the voice of God. He heard the truth. He felt the truth. He was able to receive the truth because he emptied himself and he had the ability to do it. Perhaps that was his specialness, or part of it.

Why was your mother so into Jesus?

Because she felt he was an extraordinary man. She didn’t believe, of course, that he was the son of God. But she believed that he was one of the great humans, superhumans, on the planet.

How do you incorporate Judaism and Christianity in your spiritual practice?

I’ve been practicing modalities of Eastern philosophy since about 1972. What I’ve learned through my meditation is a sense of equanimity, a sense of all things being equal. Then I went to Israel–and when I went to Israel, I had a very, very strong epiphany. Every now and then, I will light a candle; I will light candles for my mother on the High Holidays and my father and my relatives. I haven’t been to the synagogue, at least not recently.

And when I went to Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, I started to look at their society, I started to look at their people, I started to look at the ways in which they lived and what mattered to them as a society, as a people, what is their natural inclination in building a good society. Mothers and grandmothers took care of the preschoolers and created afterschool programs, where children can go after school to get them off the streets. These were incredible nurturing qualities, right down to making sure they had hot food. I looked at this and I finally realized, “Oh my G–, now I see myself. Now I know why I sit and I watch my children eat and I’m sitting over them, watching them eat and wanting them to be happy because I’m feeding them.” That’s when I realized that was my DNA.

I integrate that knowledge into my spiritual practice. But who you are has not much to do with what you are becoming, because the qualities you bring to any faith–whether it’s honed by family, religion, or lack of religion whatever it is–you bring it to wherever you’re going. The idea of faith itself, that you believe or you don’t believe in certain things, will continue no matter what faith you are in. You will learn to question all. So do I bring it to my practice? No, I don’t bring Judaism necessarily into my Buddhist thought, because all that I have been is there already.

Is that the same for the Christian half of you?

Yes. The interesting part of my spiritual life is studying as much as you can. Islam and Buddhism and Hinduism and Shamanism and Judaism, Christianity–you try to learn what the precepts are, what the religion is, and ultimately, it’s based in the same thought, it’s based in the same outcome, you know.

(Whispers) It just has a different façade.

We go into religion in order to feel warmer in our hearts, more connected to others, more connected to something greater and to have a sense of peace. I think all religions try to do that, but they corrupt themselves. I like Buddhist thought because it breaks that down; it teaches you how to view your thoughts rather than be your thoughts. We live in this crazy world, full of jobs, and we have to be there, be-be-be–it’s a very demanding, taxing world. The result of meditating is watching your thoughts, detachment from your own precepts of what is right and wrong, things that frustrate you, that you can’t grasp and want to grasp onto.

Does Kurt have a spiritual practice?

His is being out in nature. He can sit out and look at the lake for hours. It’s an interesting mind; it’s not very tumultuous.

So do you have an “interfaith” relationship?

He respects mine and I respect his-but there again, that’s not important because you realize it’s all a subjective belief system. I don’t think “Well, I can’t be with somebody who doesn’t believe what I do, or I can’t share my spirituality.” Your spirituality is shared by your actions and your interconnectedness with your family and everybody else. It’s not conceptual. What’s going to make you whole is your self-reflection and examination of yourself.

c. Interview w/Susan Sarandon another famous American actress who professes to be a fan of Jesus Christ with New Age thinking.

How would you describe your personal spiritual beliefs?

I believe in the divinity of every human being. And I try to live my life with as much compassion and kindness toward that end, of respecting other people. I suppose this, then, leads to some kind of sense of extended responsibility.

I believe in the power of a higher divine of some sort. But I think that is probably what informs all my decisions is the idea of the divine in each person. And I try to act according to that belief.

How do you incorporate those beliefs into your everyday spirituality?

I think you lead by example more than just words. I would hope that my kids have seen me in action, protecting and helping those that have been less fortunate than I have been. I hope that they see that in my daily struggles with making my own moral decisions that I try to be as thoughtful as possible.

But, mostly, I think you lead by example because as your kids get older, preaching to them doesn’t really work.

Are there any particular rituals that you have with your family?

I love the holidays. We have lots of rituals that are about the holidays. Thanksgiving is my favorite because it has the least pressure. We always have a very large Thanksgiving because we do it with another family that lives near our country house. They have five in their family, and we have five in ours. And then there’s always at least ten other people who are either at loose ends or in town just for a little while. We do a communal meal, so people all contribute. And then we all go around the table and say what we’re thankful for.

Is there a particular religious person, or spiritual person, you look up to?

I’ve always been very resistant to organized religion. Because, somehow, when religion becomes institutionalized, all the guys that started it that were so brilliant …their words get used to exclude other people. I’ve always felt that institutionalized religion never really made the transition from the words of Christ, or the words of Buddha, or the words of Confucius.

You and Tim [Robbins, Sarandon’s longtime partner] are so well known for being peace activists. What are some ways that regular people can help bring peace into the world?

I think it really starts with your neighbors. I think it starts with your everyday life and living as Christ did, in a loving way and a respectful way. That, then, leads to questioning other things. And you find in your heart what resonates with you. And then you have to take action, whether it’s in the street, or licking envelopes, or writing to your congress people, or taking care of veterans when they come home. I think that you have to not be result-oriented in order to look back on your life and think it was a life well lived. I think that it’s every single day, the choices that you make in the presence of how you go towards truth and justice. And it’s an individual decision how that manifests itself.

There is certainly so much need in the world for compassion. Every action is a political action. The only thing I’m completely sure of is that inaction is not acceptable.

I think that Christ was an activist. Christ wasn’t afraid. His life is an example of activism. I think that the gap between the rich and the poor contributes to the pain of the world. I think that anything you can do that helps to alleviate this huge gaping gap between the rich and the poor will eventually make the world a more peaceful place.

American Movement toward New Age

• It’s hard to determine how many Christians there are in America. Supposedly some figures show around 80% of the country…, and yet our government has laws that allow for same sex marriage, evolution is taught in the public schools, and abortion (the murdering of unborn babies) is protected under the law of the land. One might think that a government by the people and for the people, if it were truly following the Jesus of the Bible wouldn’t allow such things that his Word outright condemns! But saying you’re Christian and actually believe that Jesus is the only way for salvation are two entirely different things!

• There is a large movement amongst Christians organizations to join hands with all religions and become one together. It’s called COEXIST, and many influential Christian leaders, Jewish Rabbis, Muslim leaders sit on this board. Here’s the symbol for the organization with its meaning…

C = Islam 伊斯兰教

O = Pacifism (opposition towards war & violence) 和平主义,反战主义

E = Gay Rights 同性恋权利

X = Judaism 犹太教

I = Pagan 异教徒,无宗教信仰者

S = Taoism 道教

T = Christianity 基督教

• You can see these bumper stickers all around this country and the movement is growing in strength and numbers. But is this what Christianity teaches us from the Bible? Will we coexist in the world to come?

Jesus Christ – the Only Way for Salvation

I Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus

提前2:5—— 因 为 只 有 一 位 神 , 在 神 和 人 中 间 , 只 有 一 位 中 保 , 乃 是 降 世 为 人 的 基 督 耶 稣 ;

Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
