(Chapter 6)

(Chapter 6) Chapter 6:To A Model Congregation 第六章:至一个榜样教会 1 Thessalonians and 2 Thessalonians 帖撒罗尼迦前书和帖撒罗尼迦后书 Introduction 引言 The New Testament shows Christians as they really are. Often it shows believers failing to live the way they should (see Chapter 4). It is useful, therefore, to read about a group of Christians who can serve as “ a model to all the believers”(1:7). The Thessalonians are that model congregation. The first verse of 1 Thessalonians and the frequent use of the pronoun “we” should not make us think that this letter had several authors. Paul writes this letter, but speaks on behalf of his fellow pastors (2:18; 3:2; 3:5; 5:27). Paul’s Purpose in Writing On his second missionary tour, Paul came to Thessalonica (Acts 17:1-15). As he preached the message of Jesus Christ a few Jews and many Gentiles were converted. However, many of the unbelieving Jews became jealous. They started a riot and Paul, Silas and Timothy had to flee the city. After leaving Thessalonica Paul started a church in Berea, then went on to preach in Athens (Acts 17:10-34). Nevertheless, he could not stop thinking about the Thessalonian congregation. He had been with them for a short time, only a month or so. Had the church fallen apart? Had the Christians been severely persecuted by the Jews? So Paul sent Timothy back to the city to strengthen the believers and see what was happening there (1 Thess. 2:17-3:5). Meanwhile Paul himself went to Corinth (Acts 18:1). When Timothy reported back to Paul in Corinth he “brought good news about . . . [the Thessalonians’] faith and love”(1 Thessalonians 3:6). This letter, written about A.D. 51, is an answer to Timothy’s report. Paul rejoices that the church members have remained faithful (1:2-10). The unbelieving Jews in Thessalonica were questioning Paul’s pastoral authority. They also thought he was wrong for fleeing to Berea. Paul answers these charges (2:1-3:13). Then he speaks to the believers about holy living (4:1-12; 5:12-25). He also answers questions which had been raised about Christ’s second coming (4:13-5:11). Outline of 1 Thessalonians 帖撒罗尼迦前书概要 Theme: God’s Word Changes People 主题: 神的道改变人

  2. Defense of Paul’s Ministry (2:1-3:11)
  3. Encouragement to Holy Living (4:1-12)
  4. Instruction about Christ’s Second Coming(4:13- 5:11)
  5. More on Holy Living (5:12-25)
  6. Greeting (5:26-28) 问安(5:26-28) Summary 概要 Theme: God’s Word Change’s People 主题: 神的道改变人 1 Thessalonians is an example of the power God’s Word has to change people. It also shows the value of the public ministry. In just a few months the Gospel message of Jesus Christ had led many Thessalonians to believe (1:5). The Gospel kept them in the faith in spite of persecution (1:6) and turned them into a model Christian congregation (1:7). As Martin Luther said in the explanation of the Apostles’ Creed: “I believe that . . . the Holy Ghost has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith.”
(1:1-10) When Paul speaks of the Thessalonians’ faith, he gives God the glory and thanks. God made them believers through his Word (1:4-5). The Holy Spirit filled them with joy (1:6).
  8. Defense of Paul’s Ministry (2:1-3:11) (2:1-3:11) In chapter 2 Paul recalls his ministry in Thessalonica. He preached God’s Word only for godly reasons (2:1-6). He also worked to support his own ministry (2:7-9). Paul was more than a preacher; he was a pastor to the congregation (2:10-12). But the Word of God transformed the recent converts into Christians leading godly lives (2:13-16). (2:13-16)。 Even after fleeing from Thessalonica Paul remembered these believers (2:17-20). Such pastoral concern caused him to send Timothy back to Thessalonica to see what was happening in the church and to cheer up the believers (3:1-5).
  9. Encouragement to Holy Living (4:1-12) (4:1-12) While the Thessalonian Christians had been leading godly lives, Paul encourages them to “do this more and more” (4:1). It is God’s will that believers keep away from sexual immorality (4:3-8) and instead show brotherly love (4:9-10). They also should supply their own needs by useful work (4:11-12).
  10. Instruction about Christ’s Second Coming (4:13-5:11) (4:13-5:11) Paul’s preaching on the Second Coming of the Lord had a deep effect on the Thessalonian Christians. They expected Jesus to return at any time. However, as time went by, some of their members died. Would the dead Christians miss out on something since they would not be alive when Judgment Day came? Paul says, “No.”(4:13-18). Yet all the believers should live as if Christ will come very soon (5:1-11).
  11. More on Holy Living (5:12-25) (5:12-25) Finally Paul encourages the Christians to live in a proper relationship with each other (5:12-15) and with God (5:16-22). Paul, Silas, and Timothy ask that the Christians pray to God for them (5:25).
  12. Greeting (5:26-28) 问安(5:26-28) “I instruct you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers”(5:27). Paul wants all the church members to be helped by this letter. This letter, like 1 Thessalonians, begins with Paul, Silas and Timothy greeting the Thessalonian congregation. Paul wrote this letter from Corinth (3:17), a few months after sending his first letter (in A.D. 51). Paul’s Purpose in Writing We must remember that the Thessalonians were “new” Christians. Paul and his helpers had spent only a couple of months in that city. During that time many Gentiles came to faith in Christ Jesus (see introduction to 1 Thessalonians). These recent converts were filled with the love of the Lord, but they did not fully understand all the teachings of Christ. So, in his first letter to them, Paul corrected some of their misunderstandings. Now, once again, Paul writes a letter to help them in their faith and to correct them. Even though they were being persecuted, the Thessalonian believers were growing in faith (1:3). Yet they still were unclear about Christ’s second coming. Some of them believed that the day of judgment would come so soon that they no longer needed to work. They were happy to live off handouts from the church (3:6-13). Others took Paul’s previous call to be blameless at Christ’s coming (1 Thess. 3:13; 5:23) so seriously that they lived in fear of Judgment Day. In this letter Paul praises the Thessalonians for their faith. He then teaches them how a Christian should live as he waits for the day of Christ’s coming. Theme: “Concerning the Coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ” 主题: “论到我们主耶稣基督降临”
  14. Thanksgiving for their Faith (1:3-12)
  15. Living in Light of Judgment Day (2:1-3:15) 在审判日的光照中生活(2:1-3:15)
Theme: “Concerning the Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” 主题: “论到我们主耶稣基督降临” The theme of 2 Thessalonians comes from the first verse of chapter 2: “Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him . . . ” The Christians should live a proper Christian life until they meet Christ in person.
(1:1-2) Grace and peace come to the believers from God the Father and from Jesus. The Father’s undeserved love is shown in the sacrifice of his Son. Because of this the Christian is at peace with God.
  18. Thanksgiving for Their Faith (1:3-12) (1:3-12) Paul thanks God for the love he has created in the Thessalonians’ hearts, which is an example for all believers (1:3-4). While the Lord will severely judge the unbelievers, he will “be glorified in his holy people” (1:10).
  19. Living in Light of Judgment Day (2:1-3:15) 在审判日的光照中生活(2:1-3:15) Some people had false ideas about Judgment Day (2:1-2). Before that day comes, the Antichrist will start his rebellion. This servant of Satan (2:9) sets himself up in God’s place (2:4) but he brings only damnation (2:10). (2:10)。 After this warning, the Thessalonian Christians are told to hold fast to the faith God has given them (2:13-17). They also should help spread the Gospel (3:1-5). As the believers wait for Christ’s return they must work. Christians will always try to earn their own food (3:6-15).
  20. Closing (3:16-18) 结束语(3:16-18) There will be much persecution by unbelievers. Danger will come from the Antichrist’s rebellion. But Christians will find peace in what the Lord gives him (3:16). Finally, Paul assures them that he did write this letter (3:17). 08:48 MeasureMeasure Get a free Evernote account to save this article and view it later on any device.
