(Chapter 7)

The Apostle Paul spent his life spreading the Christian message and planting new congregations. However, he never forgot the individual believers. Paul took the time to find out how pastors Timothy and Titus were doing and he also wrote letters to them. Paul also helped Christians with their personal problems whenever he could. That is why he took time to help relations between a slave owner (Philemon) and his slave. Paul wrote the First Letter to Timothy (1:1). The older pastor had something to say to the younger man of God. Paul’s Purpose in Writing For two years Paul had been under house arrest in Rome (Acts 28:30). At the end of that time he was able to preach the message of Jesus Christ in Spain (Rom. 15:28). He may have been there for a year. Then he traveled eastward to visit the churches in Asia Minor and Macedonia. On the way Paul took time to do mission work on Crete (Titus 1:5), an island he had sailed past some years earlier (Acts 27:7-13). From there he went on to Ephesus for a short visit. Leaving Pastor Timothy in charge of the congregation there, Paul traveled on to Macedonia (1:3). Possibly from Thessalonica or Philippi he wrote this first letter to Timothy (about A.D. 65). When Paul visited Ephesus he found various problems in that Christian congregation. Some men no longer were emphasizing the teachings of Scripture, but had begun to teach “myths and endless genealogies”(1:4; 4:7). Paul calls such things “godless chatter”(6:20). Others were falsely saying that God’s Law taught that marriage was wrong and certain foods should not be eaten (4:1-5). Meanwhile, some congregational leaders had begun using the church to gain personal power and honor (3:6; 6:4) and to make money for themselves (3:3; 6:3-5). (3:3;6:3-5)。 Because of these problems and arguments within the church the worship services no longer were filled with Christian love and order (2:8). Many people became confused about the proper roles that men and women were to have in the church (2:11-12). (2:11-12)。 In this letter Paul tells the young pastor Timothy to take charge and bring the Ephesian church back to godliness (3:14-15). Timothy had the right background and abilities to carry out this difficult task. He was a called minister of the Gospel (1:18) who had been given pastoral gifts by God (4:14). Timothy knew the Scriptures well (2 Tim. 3:15) and he confessed Jesus as Lord (2 Tim. 1:3-4, 8). He was also not a beginner at ministry. For over 10 years he had served as a missionary with St. Paul (Acts 16:1ff). When special problems arose in congregations, Timothy had been sent to straighten things out (1 Thess. 3:1-2; 1 Cor. 4:17;16:10). The Lord made good use of Timothy in spite of his personal weaknesses. He was unsure of himself because he was still rather young (4:12). He was also shy (1 Cor. 16:10; 2 Tim. 1:7), and often suffered from poor health (5:23). Theme: “How People Should Act in God’s Household” 主题: “在神的家中应当怎样行”

  1. Introduction (1:1-20) 引言(1:1-20)
  2. Instructions about Church and Ministry(2:1-3:16)
Theme: “How People Should Act in God’s Household” 主题: “在神的家中应当怎样行” Paul says that he wrote this letter so that Christians would know how they were to act in God’s house and family. By this he means “the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth” (3:14-15). These “people” included all the people of the congregation (men and women, leaders and pastors).
  4. Introduction (1:1-20) 引言(1:1-20) First Paul makes it clear that he is writing to Timothy. This is followed by a blessing. ‘Grace’ and ‘mercy’ are two sides of the same thing. “Grace” is God giving us what we do not deserve (forgiveness of sins, life, salvation); “mercy” is God not giving us what we do deserve (eternal damnation). “Peace” is the inner calm or spiritual strength which a child of God has. In verses 3-10 Paul describes the problems of the Ephesian church. He then (1:12-17) goes on to show the true message of the church – that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”(1:15). Humble Paul and the true Gospel of salvation will stand against the false teachers with their pride and their false doctrines.
  5. Instructions about Church and Ministry(2:1-3:16) (2:1-3:16) In these chapters Paul speaks openly about church and ministry. These guidelines are to be followed: A. Pray for all men, for God “wants all men to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth”(2:4). Men are to lead the praying in the public worship service, but they first must have a proper spiritual attitude (2:8). (2:8)。 B. Women who come to church are to show a spirit of holiness. They should show this while they are still at home, getting ready to go to the service (2:9-11). Meanwhile, women are to be learners, not teachers, in the worship service itself (2:11-14; cf 1 Cor. 14:33-35). C. Men are to be the pastors, but not all men. Ministers must have the proper qualifications (3:1-7), and deacons must also (3:8-13). However, the church does not belong to pastors and deacons. It is God’s house; Jesus is its glory (3:14-16).
  6. Instructions to Pastor Timothy (4:1-6:21) (4:1-6:21) After giving guidelines about conduct in the church, Paul now speaks directly to Timothy. He gives his advice about different parts of the pastoral ministry. How should Timothy handle the false doctrines troubling the church (4:1-5)? He should share the truth with his fellow members (4:6) and refuse to accept the false teachings (4:7). He should grow in his own faith and knowledge of Scripture (4:8-10) and lead the church in worship with sound preaching and by his good example (4:11-15). (4:11-15)。 A pastor not only preaches but also counsels. Timothy must be wise in dealing with the different age groups in the church (5:1-2). Widows require special attention. Timothy must learn to recognize a true widow – one who is truly in need of help from the church and has no relatives to support her (5:3-16). Elders (ministers) should be honored and respected. They must not be falsely accused of wrongdoing (5:17-20). The pastors who oversee the church must set good examples, treat everyone equally, and not act too quickly in certain matters (5:21-25). Paul’s years of experience in the ministry taught him how to deal with slaves and their masters (6:1-2), false teachers (6:3-5), lovers of money (6:6-10), and the rich (6:17-19). Now he shares his wisdom with Timothy. Finally, Paul encouraged his young friend to live a godly life, remember his own spiritual needs (6:11-16) and care for the church (6:20-21). The second letter to Timothy was also written by the Apostle Paul (1:1). It might well be called his “last will and testament.” Paul’s Purpose in Writing Paul wrote 1 Timothy while he was in Macedonia. From there he visited Corinth, Miletus, and Troas (4:13,20). He was probably arrested in Troas and, before he could gather his belongings (4:13), was hurried off to Rome. During Paul’s second time in prison in Rome he was closely guarded but was able to receive some visitors (1:16-17). Up until then he had successfully defended himself (4:16-17). But he knew it was only a matter of time before he would be put to death (4:6-7). (4:6-7)。 Paul wanted to see Timothy one last time (4:9). However, winter was coming and soon travel on the Mediterranean Sea would be impossible. Paul did not want to go home to heaven without once again seeing his “dear son” Timothy. But if this became impossible, this letter would be his final message. It was written about A.D. 66. Paul’s final letter to Timothy is very personal. The old apostle had fought many battles for the faith. He preached the message of salvation (1:11) and often defended the Gospel against false teachings (1:13-14). While he had been wounded by his time in prison (1:8) and by cowardly co-workers (1:15), his heart was still brave (1:12). He could now wait for death with Christian dignity and receive a heavenly crown of righteousness (4:7-8). (4:7-8)。 Paul’s struggle was nearing its end, but Timothy’s was just beginning. Paul’s advice to Timothy was: “be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus” (2:1), “Endure hardship . . . like a good soldier of Christ Jesus”(2:3), “Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage ¨C with great patience and careful instruction”(4:2), “do the work of an evangelist” (4:5). In short, Paul tells Timothy, “carry out all the duties of your ministry” (4:5). Outline of 2 Timothy 提摩太后书概要 Theme: “Preach the Word” 主题: “务要传道”
  7. Greeting (1:1-2) 问安(1:1-2)
  8. Preach only the Word of God (1:3-2:13)
  9. Live as a True Minister of the Gospel(2:14-3:9)
  10. Preach the Word of God Always (3:10-4:5)
The theme of 2 Timothy comes from the last chapter: “Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage – with great patience and careful instruction” (4:2). With these words Paul is telling Timothy to faithfully carry out all the duties of the public ministry. The opposite of actively preaching the Word would be to hide the Gospel. In many places Paul tells Timothy not to be ashamed to testify about the Lord (1:8,12,16, etc.).
  12. Greeting (1:1-2) 问安(1:1-2) In this normal greeting Paul makes it clear that he is writing to Timothy. The blessing is the same as that in 1 Timothy 1:2.
  13. Preach only the Word of God (1:3-2:13) (1:3-2:13) In the first verses Paul urges Timothy to preach the pure Gospel message with all his energy. Since birth Timothy has been taught the truth of God’s Word (1:3-5; 3:15). Now as a called Christian leader he is expected to preach the Gospel boldly (1:6-7) just as Paul has been doing for many years (1:8-14). (1:8-14)。 When the evils of the ungodly world attack Christians, some give up while others remain firm in their faith (1:15-16). Timothy is urged to remain strong, to train other faithful ministers, to hold up under all hardship, and to be counted among the saved (2:1-13).
  14. Live as a True Minister of the Gospel(2:14-3:9) (2:14-3:9) If Timothy is to follow in Paul’s footsteps and train others to be pastors, he needs to live his own life like a true minister of the Gospel. He must fight false doctrine and preach the truth (2:14-19). But if he was to be “an instrument for noble purpose . . . [and] useful to the Master” (2:21) he needed to live a holy life. He needed to be wise, kind and thoughtful (2:22-26). As the clock counts down to Judgment Day, sin and false teachings will increase (3:1-9). Timothy must be aware of and prepared for this.
  15. Preach the Word of God Always (3:10-4:5) (3:10-4:5) Whatever the future holds (4:3-5) Timothy must always “preach the Word”(4:2). He will find the strength to do this if he remembers that God’s loving care preserved Paul in his faithful service and that the Gospel is God‟s tool for bringing men to faith and salvation (3:10-17).
(4:6-22) Paul will be killed but then will enter heaven (4:6-8). However, he would like to see Timothy before this happens (4:9). The last chapter in the book of Paul’s life contains the names of many church workers, some faithless, others faithful (4:9-21). (4:9-21)。 Years earlier Paul had preached the saving gospel to young Timothy. That Word grew in his heart. Now Timothy was himself a pastor and the “dear son” Paul had always wanted. While facing his own trip to heaven, Paul looks back at Timothy. The father’s prayer for his son is: “The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you”(4:22). Paul wrote this letter to Titus (1:1). He wrote it about the same time as 1 Timothy (A.D. 65). Paul’s Purpose in Writing After his release from his first time in prison in Rome, Paul may have visited Spain. From there he traveled east stopping on the island of Crete. Later he left Titus in charge of that area (1:5) while he went on to Ephesus and Macedonia (1 Tim. 1:3). There he wrote this letter to Titus. Titus had the talents and experience to be a good pastor. Years earlier Paul had introduced him to Christianity and thus could call him “my true son in our common faith”(1:4). Titus had been with Paul at the Apostolic Council in Jerusalem (Gal. 2:1-5). He was Paul’s “partner and fellow worker” on the apostle’s second missionary journey (2 Cor. 8:23). Like Timothy, Titus had been in other difficult situations. He had earlier helped restore order to the troubled Corinthian congregations (2 Cor. 2:13; 7:6-16; 8:6, 16, 23; 12:18). Titus did not have an easy job on Crete. He needed to organize the Christian churches and find good pastors for them (1:5). At the same time he had to fight against false teachers (1:14; 3:9). He needed to help the people of Crete who were famous for their sinfulness to learn to live Christian lives (1:12-13). Outline of Titus 提多书概要 Theme: “Agree with Sound Doctrine” 主题: “合乎那纯正的道理”
  17. Greeting (1:1-4) 问安(1:1-4)
  18. Qualifications of a Christian pastor (1:5-16)
  19. Teaching Holy Living (2:1-3:11)
Paul tells Titus in chapter 2:1 that he should teach only those things that agreed with the proper and correct teaching of Scripture. Such teaching brings the “hope of eternal life” (3:7) and makes people do “what is good” (3:8). Every pastor and church member must be made aware that “the knowledge of the truth . . . leads to godliness”(1:1).
  21. Greeting (1:1-4) 问安(1:1-4) Paul first points to his own authority as an apostle, then spells out the object of his ministry, and then names Titus as the person who he is writing to.
  22. Qualifications of a Christian Pastor (1:5-16) (1:5-16) While serving as a Christian missionary on Crete, Titus must organize congregations and train pastors (1:5). Any man who holds the office of elder or bishop must be a good example of Christian life (1:6-8). He must also know the teachings of Scriptures well (1:9). If any leader is sinful and teaches false doctrine, he must be called to repent (1:10-14). False teachers and leaders can be identified by their actions (1:15-16).
(2:1-3:11) Paul now tells Titus to teach old people (2:1-3), young people (2:4-8), and even slaves (2:9-10) how to behave as Christians. Holy living does not come naturally to man. It is the result of God’s grace and cannot be separated from faith in Jesus Christ (2:11-14). (2:11-14)。 Christians are also loyal citizens, honest, peaceful, helpful and humble before all men (3:1-2). Once again Paul makes it clear that a person cannot live a holy life by himself (3:3). The new life is a new life in Christ. It grows out of God’s gift of salvation given in baptism (3:4-8). (3:4-8)。 Finally Paul shows that holy living should be seen in every part of church life (3:9). Godliness does not mean being accepting of false teachers, however. The Christian church must condemn unrepentant sinners and not allow them into their fellowship (excommunicate them, 3:10 -11).
(3:12-15) In closing, Paul asks Titus to join him in Nicopolis. Zenas and Apollos, who were carrying this letter, are to be helped on their way home. Paul identifies himself as the author of this personal letter (1,19). Paul’s Purpose in Writing Paul had been placed under house arrest in Rome (1, 23). While many false charges had been brought against Paul (Acts 21:17-26:32; 28:26), he was really being held for confessing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior (Acts 26:19-23;Philem. 9). Luke tells us that “for two whole years Paul stayed in Rome in his own rented house and welcomed all who came to see him. Boldly and without hindrance he preached the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 28:30-31). One of the many visitors to whom he preached the Gospel was a runaway slave, Onesimus. Onesimus had stolen some money from his master Philemon (18-19) and fled from Colossae to Rome. Later he came into contact with Paul and through him came to know Jesus Christ. Soon his new faith produced fruit. He served the Lord by helping Paul (10,13). Thus a “useless” unbeliever and slave became a “useful” Christian (the name Onesimus means “useful”). Paul decided that Onesimus should return to his owner Philemon, even though Paul could still use his help. Philemon himself had been brought to Christ by Paul (19). He had opened his home in Colossae for church meetings. In this letter Paul asks Philemon to take back his runaway slave with the open arms of Christian love, instead of with fists of anger (15-16). (15-16)。 Paul’s co-worker Tychicus went with Philemon to Colosse carrying this letter (about A.D. 61). On the same trip, Tychicus took along Paul’s letter to the Colossian church (Col. 4:7-9). Outline of Philemon 腓利门书概要 Theme: Christians Are Family 主题: 基督徒们是一个家庭
