22：1-71 (Map of Jerusalem at the time of Jesus crucifixion)
The eight-day festival of Passover remembers the freedom of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt.
After Joseph died in Genesis chapter 50, the Israelites became slaves to the Egyptian pharaohs/kings. During this time the Israelites were forced into backbreaking labor and unbearable horrors. God saw the people’s distress and sent Moses to Pharaoh with a message: “Send forth My people, so that they may serve Me.” But despite numerous warnings, Pharaoh refused to heed God’s command to let the Israelites leave. God then sent upon Egypt ten devastating plagues, afflicting them and destroying everything from their livestock to their crops. The last of the ten plagues on the Egyptians, killed all the Egyptian firstborns. While doing so, God spared the Children of Israel by “passing over” their homes—hence the name of the holiday. Pharaoh’s resistance was broken, and he chased his former slaves out of the land. The Israelites left in such a hurry, in fact, that the bread they baked as provisions for the way did not have time to rise. Six hundred thousand adult males, plus many more women and children, left Egypt on that day.
1 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. What do you remember about Judas? 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. Who wanted to destroy Jesus? Why? 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. What was the agreement?
Thursday.星期四 The Last Supper最后的晚餐 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.” A room was needed, with a table, surrounded by couches, as the Passover lamb was eaten in reclining position. A lamb had to be bought, which was slain in the Temple by a priest between three and five o’clock and roasted in a private house, and bitter herbs, wine, and unleavened bread had to be bought.
9 “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked. 10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.” What other recent time had Jesus given His disciples instructions to carry out that showed Jesus was all knowing? 13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. The main elements and order of the Passover Feast: 逾越节筵席的主要部分和顺序： · The participants arrange themselves in proper order, reclining on couches on the left side, around the table. · The first cup was filled with red wine and water. A blessing was asked by the head of the family on the feast and on the cup. · The master of the house then tasted the wine and passed it around. A basin of water and a towel were handed around. · A prayer of Thanksgiving was offered. The eating of bitter herbs, as a reminder of the bitter slavery in Egypt. · Someone asks “Why is this night special from all other nights?” At this time, the history of the Passover is read. · The singing of the first part of the Hallel (Psalms 113, 114) and the drinking of the second cup. · The carving and eating of the lamb, together with unleavened bread. · Continuation of the meal, each eating as much as he liked, but always ending with the lamb. The third cup, known as the cup of blessing was passed around and drank. · The prayer after the meal is recited and there is singing of the last part of the Hallel (Psalms 115-118). The fourth cup.
It appears that Luke is not recording the events in verses 14-30 in order. He records the most important first - the Lord's Supper. Then he tells of Jesus' comments about his betrayer and about the argument over who would be greatest. Judas was not present when Jesus gave the Lord's Supper.
14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.” Explain why Jesus want to eat this meal.
17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” This was probably the third cup.
19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” What were the disciples to do to remember Jesus?
20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
Read Jeremiah 31:31-34and answer the question: What is the “new covenant”?
31 “The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the LORD. 33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the LORD,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the LORD. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” 31:31 耶和华说，日子将到，我要与以色列家和犹大家另立新约， 31:32 不像我拉着他们祖宗的手，领他们出埃及地的时候，与他们所立的约。
21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. What was Jesus letting the disciples know? What does this control tell us? 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. 24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. What other time had the disciples argued about who was the greatest? See Luke 9: 46. 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. Who likes to call themselves the greatest? 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. What does Jesus mean? 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. How does Jesus serve His disciples? 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” Who is Simon? Why did Jesus change Simon’s name? Why does Simon need the extra prayers? What does Jesus foresee in Simon’s future? 33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” How would you describe Peter’s bold statement? 34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.” 35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” “Nothing,” they answered. 36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. Why would the disciples have to take a purse, bag, and a sword? 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.” What is Jesus once again telling the disciples? 38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.” “That’s enough!” he replied.
Benefactors - A title for rulers as a display of honor
Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives – Gethsemane耶稣在橄榄山祷告 —- 客西马尼园 The word Gethsemane is made up either of two Hebrew words, signifying “valley of fatness” - that is, a fertile valley; or of two words, signifying “an olive-press.” The garden itself was located on the western foot of the Mount of Olives and was less than fifty-seven yards square in area. It was in the garden of Gethsemane that Jesus was betrayed by Judas and arrested.
39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” What kind of temptation? 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” To whom does Jesus pray? What is Jesus asking? 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. Name some ways we can tell Jesus is in agony.
45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. Why were the disciples sorrowful? 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” What does Jesus ask of the disciples?
47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. Why were so many people needed? He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” What does a kiss symbolize? 49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. What had the disciples already forgotten? 51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him. What do we learn about Jesus? 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? Who came for Jesus? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour—when darkness reigns.” Think of some reasons why Jesus had not been arrested earlier. What is starting?
Jesus was arraigned before two courts, the Jewish Church Council and the civil court of the Romans. The Romans who ruled the country of the Jews, permitted the Jews to try all cases of a religious nature before the Sanhedrin; but the death sentence could not be executed without the consent of the governor. Thus it was that Jesus had to be tried by Pilate after the Council of the Hews had unanimously condemned Him to death.
54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. Why do you think Peter came to the courtyard? 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.” 57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said. This is Peter’s first denial. 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” “Man, I am not!” Peter replied. This is Peter’s second denial. 59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.” What were the people in the courtyard able to recognize? 60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. What did Peter remember? What does this account teach us about the nature of the human heart and of our Savior’s heart?
The Guards Mock Jesus兵丁戏弄耶稣 63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65 And they said many other insulting things to him. How did the guards treat Jesus?
Jesus Before Pilate and Herod耶稣在彼拉多和希律前受审 66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.” Why did the chief priests and the teachers of the law want to hear Jesus call Himself the Messiah? Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.” What does Jesus answer mean? 70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?” He replied, “You say that I am.” 71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.” What is Jesus guilty of? 22:66 天 一 亮 ， 民 间 的 众 长 老 连 祭 司 长 带 文 士 都 聚 会 。
