Lesson 4 The Gospel In The Word And The Sacraments, The Means Of Grace

Lesson 4: The Gospel In The Word And The Sacraments, The Means Of Grace The Two Great Truths Of The Bible 圣经的两大真理 ——律法与福音—— Lesson 4: The Gospel In The Word And The Sacraments, The Means Of Grace 第四课 福音在神的话语与圣礼中 神的恩典的传达方式 A. God’s Gospel Delivery System 福音的传达系统 Submit

  1. In His great love for sinful people, God has not only sent Jesus Christ to fulfill the holy demands of the law and pay the full penalty of sin for all. He has also developed special ways through which He imparts this “good news” to people and give them the wonderful benefits of Jesus’ redeeming work. COMMENTARY Think of the wires in your house which bring electricity to you; or the pipes which bring water; or the internet connection which bring the Internet to you. The Gospel is the delivery system which brings forgiveness and eternal life to us Submit
  2. God causes the gospel to come to people in the forms of the Word (as it is read, heard, or remembered) and the two Sacraments (Holy Baptism and Holy Communion). We call the Gospel as it comes in the form of the Word and Sacraments “the means or paths of God’s grace” because they are the ways or routes by which God brings His saving grace in Jesus Christ into our lives. COMMENTARY Whether you get drinking water by the bottle at the store or through the pipes in your house or with a bucket at a well, you still get drinking water which can remove your thirst. Whether the gospel comes through word or sacrament, it is the same “living water” (forgiveness, life, salvation) as Jesus refers to it in his words to the woman at the well in John chapter 4. Submit
  3. The Holy Spirit works through the Gospel in these forms to bring people to and preserve and strengthen them in saving faith in Christ. COMMENTARY We want to see in this lesson that the means by which God gave us our faith is the same means by which He keeps that faith alive in us so that in the end we will have eternal life. B. The Gospel In God’s Word God has the Gospel come to people through His Word in several ways:

The word “sacrament” comes from the Latin word “sacramentum,” which means “a solemn, sacred pledge.” In the sacraments, God is the One who makes a solemn, sacred pledge to bless people because of Jesus Christ. Do you have any questions about the number of sacraments? Submit

Connected with God’s Word – which gives the sacraments their power; 与神的话语相连接,被赋予神的能力; e. through which God offers, gives and assures forgiveness of sins, eternal life and salvation. COMMENTARY: This definition is established by studying the two sacraments which the Savior gave to the Church and noticing what is common between them. This definition (a-e) applies to two sacraments: [Holy] Baptism and [Holy] Communion. Any Questions about this definition? Submit
  3. Sacraments are not empty symbols, sacrifices offered to God or church ceremonies. They are Gospel instruments by which God actually gives His spiritual blessings to people. Question: are you aware of any church which calls Baptism and Communion symbolic acts only? (真实的同在) QUESTION: Why do we refer to the body and blood of Christ as the “spiritual elements”? (Not because they are unreal, but because we cannot see, taste or smell that they are present in this sacrament. We know they are present not by taste, smell or touch, but by listening to the Word of Jesus who assures us that in this sacrament he gives us his body and blood with the bread and the wine..
  3. In Communion, God gives the following Gospel blessings to people: Submit a. God gives the forgiveness of sins.

  2. Without God’s delivery system of the means of grace, Jesus’ redeeming work would be of no help to us.
