C. God Has An Amazing Will 上帝有奇妙的旨意
  1. Among the many attributes and abilities that the Triune God possesses is His capacity to will, that is, to wish, desire, choose, etc.

  2. The NewTestament uses two primary words for the English word “will”.

    a. Boulomai (verb), Boule (noun) are used 46 times and generally mean “to wish, to determine, to resolve”

a.Boulomai(动词),Boule(名词)在新约圣经中被使用了46次,通常的意思是“希望、决定、决意”。

    b. Thelo (verb), Thelema (noun) are used 274 times and generally mean “to desire, to choose, to intend”

  3. A simple way to think about this is to regard God’s will as = what God wants?

  4. God’s will has these qualities:

    a. It is good and perfect (Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will. – Romans 12:2)

    b. It is free and independent (For God says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” – Romans 9:15)

    c. It is powerful and completely effective (“What I have said, that will I bring about; what I have planned, that will I do.” – Isaiah 46:11b)

    d. It is guided by His love and is concerned for the needs and weaknesses of His creatures (As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him; for He knows how we are formed, He remembers that we are dust.” – Psalm 103:13-14)

    e. It is often beyond the ability of humans to understand (“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” – Isaiah 55:8-9)

D. Important Aspects Of God’s Will

As we consider that the Bible tells us about God’s will, we note some rather interesting aspects or features:

  1. God’s Unconditional Will: God will do what He wants all by Himself, without requiring or depending on any conditions to be met by others. (“I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.” (Isaiah 46:9b-10)

  2. God’s Conditional Will: God will do something, but only ¬if a certain condition or set of conditions is met. (“Now, if you obey Me fully and keep My covenant, then out of all nations you will be My treasured possession.” – Exodus 19:5)

  3. God’s Revealed Will: God has made known to people many things so that they may know them also. (Now to Him who is able to establish you by my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all nations might believe and obey Him. – Romans 16:25-26)

  4. God’s Hidden Will: God has kept many things a secret from us. (Truly, You are a God who hides Himself. – Isaiah 45:15a; Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable His judgments and His paths beyond tracing out! – Romans 11:33)

  5. God’s Direct/Absolute Will: God carries out what He wishes apart from means or instruments. (The Lord brings death and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and raises up. – 1 Samuel 2:6)

  6. God’s Indirect/Instrumental Will: God carries out what He wishes through means, agents and instruments (such as the natural world, people). (He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for man to cultivate – bringing forth food from the earth: wine that gladdens the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread that sustains his heart. – Psalm 104:14-15; “From the east I summon a bird of pray; from a far-off land, a man to fulfill my purpose. – Isaiah 46:11a))

  7. God’s Irresistible Will: No one and nothing can successful oppose what God wants and does. (Than Job replied to the Lord: “I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted.” – Job 42:1-2)

  8. God’s Resistible Will: What God offers can be opposed and refused when He offers it through means or instruments. (But whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on Him. – John 6:36b)

  9. God’s Approving Will: God endorses the good things people do. (I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior. – 1 Timothy 2:1-3)

  10. God’s Permissive Will: God allows things to happen, even things that are sinful and evil. (The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. – Genesis 6:5)

  11. God’s Holy, Moral, Demanding Will (The Law): (It is God’s will that you should be holy – 1 Thessalonians 4:3; “Do not steal. Do not lie. Do not deceive one another. Do not swear falsely by My name and so profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.” - Leviticus 19:11-12)

  12. God’s Gracious, Saving, Strengthening Will (The Gospel): (For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. – John 3:16-17)

  13. God’s Leading/Antecedent Will: God’s primary wish to is save sinners by His grace through faith in Jesus Christ. (God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. – 1 Timothy 2:3b-4; For My Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. – John 6:40 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. – John 3:36)

  14. God’s Following/Consequent Will: If people refuse to be saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus, then God’s follow-up wish is that they suffer the consequence of their sin and unbelief and be lost. (Whoever believe in Him (the Son) is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. – John 3:18; But whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him. – John 3:36b)

F. God’s Will In Relation To Angelic And Human Wills
  1. The Will Of The Holy Angels

*The Holy Angels retain the holiness in which God created them and perfectly follow the will of God (Praise the Lord, you His angels, you mighty ones who do His bidding, who obey His word.. – Psalm 103:20)

  2. The Will Of The Sinful Angels

*The Sinful Angels have lost their original holiness and have become thoroughly evil. They are now and will remain fully opposed to following God’s will, and firmly intent on getting people to follow their corrupted will. (God did not spare angels when they sinned. – 2 Peter 2:4a; He (the devil) was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is not truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. – John 8:44b; That they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will. – 2 Timothy 2:26)

  3. The Will Of Sinful Human Beings

    a. The Bondage of the will in spiritual matters: Because of the fall into sin, people’s wills are bound in spiritual matters. By nature they are spiritually dead and have no spiritual goodness or powers. They must be brought to faith and renewed by the Holy Spirit working through the Gospel in order to have spiritual life. (As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins. – Ephesians 2:1; The sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. – Romans 8:7; But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved.” – Ephesians 2:4-5; No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit – 1 Corinthians 12:3b))

    b. The Freedom the will: Before the fall into sin, people were perfect and had complete freedom to follow God’s will for them. After the fall into sin, people are, by nature, under the power and corruption of sin, but they do have the freedom to make choices in non-spiritual matters.

  4. The Error Of Fatalism: God has determined everything in advance and people have no ability to impact or change anything.

  5. The Error Of Human Determinism: People are the ones who decide what happens to them and others. God is not involved.

G. The Believing Response To God’s Will – “Not My Will, But Your Will Be Done”
  1. Respectful Acceptance - to honor the fact that God’s will is supreme and to desire that God’s will be accomplished (“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” – Luke 1:38; When Paul would not be dissuaded, we gave up and said, “The Lord’s will be done.” – Acts 21:14)

  2. Sincere Repentance - to sincerely sorrow over all our failures to follow God’s will (I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed: “O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant of love with all who love Him and obey His commands, we have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from Your commands and laws.” – Daniel 8:4-5)

  3. Confident Reliance - to trust everything God wants us to know and believe about Him and His will. (Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I believe in Your commands. . . I rise before dawn and cry for help; I have put my hope in Your word. – Psalm 119:66, 147)

  4. Willing Obedience - to do all that God wants us to do and to bear all that God wants us to bear. (I desire to do Your will, O my God’; Your law is in my heart. – Psalm 40:8; So then, all who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good. – 1 Peter 4:19)

  5. Courageous Living – gladly and boldly use the abilities and opportunities God gives us to live our lives to fulfill the purposes He has for us. (Whatever you hand finds to do, do it with all your might. – Ecclesiastes 9:10a; Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let not your hands be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well. – Ecclesiastes 11:6)
