第十二课(lesson #12) 为我们的主服侍人 LIFE WITH OUR LORD 与主同行的生活 Serving People For Our Lord 为我们的主服侍人 Lesson 12 第12课 Goal: To learn how to love and serve people better as an expression of our love for the Lord Jesus, who loves us. Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, You have served us with a love that knows no limits. Your service has brought us eternal joy and salvation. As Your grateful steward-disciples, we pray that You empower us to be faithful, loving servants of others. Make us sensitive to their needs. Make us determined to act for their benefit. Make us faithful to demonstrate Christ-like love to others through all the days of our life. We ask this on the basis of Your loving, saving service to us. Amen. I. Our Lord Calls Us To Love Other People I. A. Our Lord calls us to love all people, even our enemies, as He has loved us. Romans 5:6-8 - You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possible dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
- Our Lord Jesus has shown us a love that is beyond all deserving. He has suffered and died to cancel out the sin of defiant, despising rebels who have often betrayed His divine love. To a sinful world that says: “I could not care less about You, God,” our Lord Jesus says: “I could not care more about you.” John 15:12-13 - My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.
- Our Lord commands us to love others as He has loved us - unconditionally, sacrificially, completely. 1 John 4:10-11 - This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
- Our Lord’s sacrificial, rescuing love for us is the compelling reason for us to love others.
- “My God, without any merit on my part, out of His pure and free mercy, has given to me, an unworthy, condemned and contemptible creature, all the riches of justification and salvation in Christ. I am no longer in want of anything, except faith that this is so. Having such a Father, who has overwhelmed me with these inestimable riches of His, why should I not freely, with my whole heart and from voluntary zeal, do for Him all that I know will be pleasing to Him and acceptable in His sight? I will therefore give myself, as a sort of Christ, to my neighbor, even as Christ has given Himself to me; I will do nothing in this life except that what I see will be needful, advantageous, and wholesome for my neighbor, since by faith I abound in all things in Christ! (马丁·路德) Matthew 5:43-45a - You have heard that it was said, “Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.
- “To love our enemies is not easy, but it is Christian, and nothing less is.” B. Loving other people is an inescapable obligation for Christ’s steward-disciples. Romans 13:8-10 - Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellow man has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “Do not commit adultery,” “Do not murder,” “Do not steal,” “Do not covet,” and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in those one rule: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to the neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
- It does not matter how much money we may have, we all have a special debt we owe. It is the debt of love that God directs us to pay to others every day of our life. 1 John 4:19-21 - We love because He (God) first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And He has given us this command: “Whoever loves God must also love his brother.”
- Our Lord inseparably joins the command to love Him with the command to love all people.
- “The person who loves God cannot hate people. Nor can the person who hates God love people.” (约翰 克里索斯托 ) John 13:34-35 - A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. All people will know that you are My disciples if you love one another.
- Love for others is an identifying mark of a Christian steward-disciple. A living union with Jesus Christ shows itself in love for others. True faith expresses itself through love. C. Our Lord helps us understand the true nature of love. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 - Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, It is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
- At its heart, Christian love is firmly devoted to seeking what is best for other people.
- Some of the characteristics of Christian love are: 基督之爱的一些特点是: a. Sacrificial a. 牺牲的 b. Averse to evil or revenge b. Delights in doing good c. Forgiving d. 宽恕 e. Selfless e. 无私的 f. Protecting f. 保护的 g. Loyal g. Romans 15:2 - Each of us should please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.
- “Christianity is more than a belief or creed that saves one for the next world; it is a way of living. It is a life of love and service. The Christian is one who devotes his powers, abilities, and money to help others.”
- It is the nature of love “to quietly accept the challenge of completing the other person.” Philippians 2:4-8 - Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus; who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death - even death on a cross!
- Love looks out for the interests of others. Love willingly sacrifices one’s own advantage for the good of the neighbor.
- Christ’s humble servant love for us is both our model and our motivation for loving others.
- Love which expresses itself in active, self-giving service to others is powerful. Stanley Mooneyham, a former director of World Vision, once said: “Love merely talked about is easily turned aside. Love demonstrated is almost irresistible.” II. Our Lord Gives Us Certain Roles In Life That Put Us In Relationships With People Whom We Are To Love And Serve II. These roles and relationships are part of our Christian calling. They help determine our responsibilities to care for and serve specific people. A. Husbands A. 丈夫 Ephesians 5:25-28a - Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the Word, and to present her to Himself as a radiant Church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. 1 Peter 3:7a - Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect. Husbands are to serve their wives by showing them Christ-like love, consideration and respect. Ephesians 5:22-24 - Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the Head of the Church, His body, of which He is the Savior. Now as the Church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Wives are to serve their husbands by showing Church-like love and respect to them. Ephesians 6:4 - Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 - These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Parents are to serve their children by guiding and instructing them in the Word and will of God. Ephesians 6:1-3 - Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” - which is the first commandment with a promise - “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” Colossians 3:20 - Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. 1 Timothy 5:4 - But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God. Children are to serve their parents by obeying, respecting and caring for them. E. Employers/Supervisors E. 雇主/主管 Ephesians 6:9 - And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that He who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with Him. Colossians 4:1 - Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven. Employers/supervisors are to serve their workers by treating them kindly and fairly. Ephesians 6:5-8 - Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. Titus 2:9-10 - Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive. Workers are to serve their employers/supervisors by working diligently and honestly and by treating them with respect. 1 Peter 5:2-3 - Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers - not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. Titus 1:9 - (An elder) must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. Church leaders are to serve members of the church by instructing them in sound teaching, by serving as wholesome examples to them, by watching over them and by caring for their spiritual welfare. Hebrews 13:7, 17 - Remember your leaders, who spoke the Word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith . . . Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.
- Church members are to serve their spiritual leaders by imitating their godly example and by respecting their authority and cooperating with them. Hebrews 10:24-25 - And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
- Church members are to serve fellow members by encouraging them in their faith and discipleship. Romans 14:1, 13, 15-16, 19-21; 15:1 - Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters. Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way. If your brother is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy your brother for whom Christ died. Do not allow what you consider good to be spoken of as evil. Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall. We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.
- Church members are to serve fellow members by using their Christian freedom in ways that will benefit them and not influence them to fall into sin and/or unbelief. I. Citizens I.公民 1 Peter 2:13-14 - Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. Romans 13:1a, 7 - Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. . . Give everyone what you owe him: if you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. Citizens are to serve their government by submitting to the authority of their government. III. Our Lord Calls Us To Meet The Needs Of Others III. A. Our Lord calls His steward-disciples to bear the burdens of others. Galatians 6:2 - Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
- “To pity distress is human; to relieve it is God-like.”
- Our Lord calls us to give others more than our pity when they have difficulties. He calls on us to give them our help. B. Our Lord calls us to meet the physical needs of others. James 2:15-16 - Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? 1 John 3:16-18 - This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.
- God wants us to give of the material resources He has given us to meet the genuine physical needs of others.
- “Because You have given much, I too shall give; Out of your great blessings, Lord, each day I live - To every person that I see Who has the need of help from me.”
- “You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.” C. Our Lord calls us to meet the spiritual needs of others. Matthew 9:36-38 - When He (Jesus) saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.” Matthew 28:19-20a - Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
- Christ says to every lost sinner: “Come!” and to every converted sinner: “Go!”
- The day has now come when a Christian who is not praying and working to share the Gospel to make disciples must first explain and then apologize for this omission. God’s call to believers today is not to let their Christianity end in what it does for them, but to let it begin by doing something for God and for others. God gives the church the serious work of proclaiming the Gospel to all nations. This is the highest expression of Christian service in the world. D. Our Lord calls us to show love in many ways. Romans 12:13-21 - Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge: I will repay,” says the Lord. On the contrary: “If you enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good.
