Lesson 10

For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. (雅各书3:16) clip-image001 Jealousy is an emotion and typically refers to the negative thoughts and feelings of insecurity, fear, and anxiety over an anticipated loss of something that the person values, particularly in reference to a human connection… It is not to be confused with envy. Jealousy is a familiar experience in human relationships. It has been observed in infants five months and older. Jealousy is seen and observed in every culture. clip-image002 Envy is best defined as a resentful emotion that occurs when a person lacks another’s (perceived) superior quality, achievement, or possession and either desires it or wishes that the other lacked it. Eve became envious of God’s ability to know both good and evil and thought that it might benefit her to know the same as God. Genesis 3:5 “for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” · While there is a subtle difference between the definition of envy and jealously, the two sins are often connected or linked together. Eve certainly serves as an example from the Bible of someone who was clearly envious as she thought that she lacked something from the God who created her, so she took the bait of the devil and ate the fruit from the tree that God commanded her not to eat from. Let’s consider a Biblical account of jealousy. clip-image003 1 Samuel 18:6-9 When the men were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs and with tambourines and lutes. 7 As they danced, they sang: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” 8 Saul was very angry; this refrain galled him. “They have credited David with tens of thousands,” he thought, “but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?” 9 And from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David. · If you read on about Saul, he never quite got over his jealousy for David. In fact, we are told that God sent Saul an evil spirit as a result of his sin that consumed him with his sin of jealousy. From that moment on, Saul would not rest until he had the chance to kill David, the future king of Israel. History chronicles behavior like this all of the time. Right now, an estimated 200,000 people are in work camps, treated worse than animals in North Korea because of political indifference toward the current regime. Jealousy and Envy originate in the heart 3:13-16 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. Consider how bitter envying affected the well-being of the church in Corinth… 3:1-4 Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly—mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men? 4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere men?

Read the following… 。。 clip-image006 1 John 1:8-10 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
  6. If a Christian doesn’t understand what the sin of envy and jealousy are, what will he refuse to do? (Look at verse 9)
  7. And if we don’t confess the sin of jealousy and envy what are we bound to do? · If we fail to confess sin, it’s the same as saying that we’re without sin! And it’s important that we as Christians make this very important distinction. Otherwise we will give the impression to others that some sins are more serious than others. God does not discriminate between any sins that a person commits. And if we fail to confess sin, we will certainly keep repeating the sin over and over. God desires to heal us of Envy and Jealousy 神希望医治我们的嫉妒和妒忌 · Nobody ought to question the fact that we human beings by nature are envious and jealous. Before asking God to forgive us for jealousy and envy, we ought to pray to God and ask him to help us identify our jealousy and envy because so often we see it in others but fail to see it in ourselves. But God’s solution for our sin is not, “Try harder” or “start acting like a better person.” Of course God’s desire for us is that we live perfect lives, free from jealously and envy, and something no human being is capable of doing. For this reason we look to a perfect Savior and derive our inspiration to live godly lives from his work on the cross to atone for all our sins, including the sins of jealousy and envy.
