Understanding the Origin of Guilt
Revelation 12:10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.
Satan = Accuser 撒旦=控告者
It was the devil, who first came to Eve and portrayed God to be a bully for not wanting her to see both ”good and evil,“ and that’s why he didn’t want her to eat from the tree in the middle of the Garden. Soon after she ate the fruit and gave some
to her husband, guilt and shame came over Adam and Eve and therefore the whole human race immediately followed their sin. And there the devil was to remind the fallen human race that they are not worthy to be called God’s children any longer. ”For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night…“
The devil not only shames us into feeling dirty and unworthy, but night and day he accuses us before God’s throne in order to remind God of our unworthiness.
John 8:44 He [Satan] was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Galatians 3:26-29 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male
nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Colossians 1:12-14 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Two kinds of guilt 2
The Bible differentiates between godly sorrow, which leads a person to repentance and life with God, and worldly sorrow, which only leads to eternal death.
2 Corinthians 7:10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
Consider the degree of difference between godly sorrow and worldly sorrow through the following examples in Scripture.
Guilt that produces death
John 12:1-6
Six days before the Passover Jesus arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5 ”Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.“ 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.
Matthew 27:3-5
When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders. 4 ”I have sinned,“ he said, ”for I have betrayed innocent blood.“
”What is that to us?“ they replied. ”That’s your responsibility.“
5 So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

Luke 19:1-10
Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.
5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, ”Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.“ 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, ”He has gone to be the guest of a ‘sinner.‘“
8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, ”Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.“
9 Jesus said to him, ”Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.“

Let us not forget that both types of guilt make a person feel dirty and unclean and unworthy. The difference, therefore, is not how the guilt makes us feel, but rather what we do with the guilt that we feel and experience. Do we look to Jesus and the cross or do we look elsewhere. The cross heals of guilt; all else in life only compounds the guilt in the end.

1 Peter 5:8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
The Devil is certainly the prince of this world. However, his desires are being fulfilled with those who are unbelievers. His real target is the church – the body of believers.
- Our enemy loves to remind us of our past failures so that we dwell on them because when we dwell on our past failures, what do we fail to appreciate?
- What is the difference between condemnation of sin and being convicted of sin and led to repent of it?
From the Augsburg Confession, Article XII
Properly speaking, true repentance is nothing else than to have contrition and sorrow, or terror, on account of sin, and yet at the same time to believe the Gospel and absolution (namely, that sin has been forgiven and grace has been obtained through Christ), and this faith will comfort the heart and again set it at rest. Amendment of life and the forsaking of sin should then follow, for these must be the fruits of repentance, as John says, ”Bear fruit that befits repentance“ (Matthew 3:8)。
A person in life, even a Christian, might be going through a period of time where they are experiencing nothing more than the condemnation of their own sin, in which case this is no different than worldly sorrow, which leads to unbelief and death. Repentance in the Christian’s heart must always look to Jesus in faith for the absolving of his guilty heart so that he might be healed and set at peace from the condemnations of the law and this is the great difference between condemnation and conviction; worldly sorrow and godly sorrow.

Philippians 3:13,14 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

The ancient church father, St. Augustine, who spent the earlier part of his life running around with women and living a godless life, recalls later in life, after coming to faith in Jesus an old mistress stopping him on the street. When she and Augustine made eye contact, Augustine quickly walked the opposite direction she was coming from. Surprised by this, the woman cried out, ”Augustine, it is I.“ But continuing on his way, Augustine cried back, ”Yes, but it is not I.“
- How had Augustine put Paul’s words, ”Forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead,“ into practice?
2 Corinthians 5:17-19 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them.
A ”new creature in Christ“ is not a perfect creature, but a forgiven creature. And if Jesus forgives our sin, who are we to hang on to it and allow it to shred us to pieces with guilt? Read the following passages and identify the way in which the Bible describes how completely God has erased our guilt and sin.

Psalm 103:11,12 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him;12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

Micah 7:19 You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.
- The Pacific Ocean has depths in it that reach nearly 36,000 feet. Considering the fact that most Jets fly in the air between 28,000-36,000 feet, that puts the depths of the sea into perspective. What is God trying to teach us through the prophet Micah about our sins and iniquities being ”hurled into the depths of the sea?“
- How has God hurled them into the sea?
Isaiah 43:25 ”I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.“
- As Christians, if we ”remember“ our sins and dwell on them beyond taking them to the cross, what aren’t we allowing God to do with those sins?
Jesus gave to us the supper commonly called, The Lord’s Supper so that our sins would no longer plague us. And in that meal, he promises forgiveness of sins, as we are reminded of his death on the cross. This meal was not to be a one-time meal like baptism, but was rather to be a meal that Christians are to celebrate often throughout their lives because it is also a celebration of our Lord’s victory over our sin.

1 Corinthians 11:23-26 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ”This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.“25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, ”This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.“ 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
Jesus also invites sinners, who are heavy laden by the guild of breaking God’s law to come to him for their rest. And we come to Jesus each time we gather as Christians to hear God’s Word, or each time we personally meditate on his Word or each time we come to the Lord’s Supper to be refreshed by our Savior. Jesus knows that throughout our whole earthly life we will struggle with sin because each of us has a sinful flesh. But Jesus teaches in the gospel that he condemns sin in us, but allowing himself to be condemned for our sin on the cross. And that he did not come into this world to condemn us, but rather to set us free from the accusations of the law.
John 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
