The Root Cause of Domestic Violence

Genesis 3:16-19

To the woman he said, “I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” 17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat of it,’ ”Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.“

  1. What curse had Adam and Eve brought upon themselves by disobeying God’s command?

  1. Who was affected by the actions of Adam and Eve?

Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned.

  1. What do we call the fact that sin has been passed down from 1 generation to the next?

Application: Unfortunately, domestic violence has been a part of this world since the time of Adam and Eve. In fact, Adam and Eve’s son Abel was the first victim of domestic violence when his brother Cain took his life. Sadly, domestic violence will never be gone from this earthly life until Judgment Day. So long as sin reigns in the heart of mankind, every perverse sin of the heart, including domestic violence will remain as a part of the curse of sin and the consequences of a sinful world. As Christians, it’s vitally important that we understand the root cause of domestic violence because the way the world tries to change behavior will be drastically different from the way the Christian tries to deter bad behavior.

Application: Recently, in America there has been a nation-wide agenda to stop bullying at school. There’s been a national awareness of young boys and girls ending their life through suicide because they are being picked on at school by older and bigger people. But putting up posters in the hallway that say, ”We are a no bullying-school“ will not stop bullying. Pouring millions and millions dollars into programs across our nation to prevent bullying will never stop bullying because what our government fails to recognize is the root cause of all sin. It stems from the Garden of Eden. If a person does not understand the root cause of sin, they can’t understand how to fix it either. Only through Christ and the power of the gospel can hearts and lives begin the process of change for the better.

Ephesians 2:1-5

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

How can we help victims?

Our hearts and our prayers certainly go out to anyone who has been a victim of household abuse, be it physical abuse or sexual abuse or both. The road to recovery is not going to be a quick fix. In fact, the pain might never go away in this life. However, we can praise God for the life that he has prepared for us in heaven where the old order of things will be forever gone!

James 5:16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

Romans 8:32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

God promises to give his children the very things that we need in this life in order to stay connected to his grace for the life to come when there will be no more pain, suffering, or sorrow. If God didn’t spare his Son for us, but knew that we needed his sacrifice to obtain forgiveness and eternal life, then it also stands to reason, according to Paul, that God will give other things that we need to cope with whatever bad things have occurred against us in our lifetime.
